History of the Chair
The Department was formed in April 2017 as a result of structural changes in the University based on the division and unification of two departments:” history, law and methods of teaching them” and ” philosophy and social studies. The long-term head of the Department of “history, law and teaching methods” was candidate of historical Sciences, associate Professor Elena Vardanyan, then candidate of historical Sciences, associate Professor Hovhannes Khorikyan, and candidate of philosophical Sciences, associate Professor Hayk Haroyan was the head of the “Department of philosophy and sociology. Currently acting head of the Department is candidate of historical Sciences, associate Professor Hovhannes Khorikyan. The department employs 7 highly qualified associate professors, 2 associate professors and 7 lecturers. The newly created Department was based on the Department of history, which is one of the oldest departments of the Gyumri state pedagogical Institute, having been subjected to several structural changes for decades.
The chair implements the “History” educational program in the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Applicants also study in the chair. It should be mentioned that the “Armenian History” university course is taught in all faculties of the university.
The chair is a center of active research activities. The various issues of Armenian and World history, different periods of archeology, history teaching methods are studied by the lecturers of the chair. Some of the lecturers of the chair are engaged in the study of various issues of philosophy and theology. Dozens of monographs, teaching manuals, hundreds of scientific articles have been published by the lecturers of the chair. The chair has established practical relations with the departments of history and academic institutes of other universities of the republic.
The lecturers of the chair have been actively participating in national and international conferences for many years. Scientific seminars and debates on current historical and philosophical issues are regularly organized by the Chair.
