FACULTY OF HUMANITIES

On the basis of Russian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philology from the mid-1970s, as well as English departments opened in the early 80s, the Faculty of Foreign Languages was established at the institute in 1983, where more than 800 students are taught English, French, German, Russian literature and Translation. The Department of Humanities and Arts was established on the basis of the Section of the Russian Language and Literature opened in the 1970s and the Russian-English section founded in the 1980s at the Department of Philology, which later gave birth to the Department of Foreign Languages with over 800 students studying the Russian, English, French and German languages as well as English-Armenian and English-Russian Translation. The first dean of the department was Associate Professor Mr. Yuri Safyan whose work was successfully continued by Ms. Sahakanush Grigoryan, Associate Professor, Candidate of Philology (PhD). Since 2013, the duties of the Dean of the Department have been assumed by Mrs. T. Melikyan, Associate Professor, Candidate of Philology (PhD). Since 2008, the department has been conducting two-year Master’s Degree programmes in the following professions: English Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature.

In 2016, as a result of structural changes at “Shirak State University after M. Nalbandyan” Foundation, the faculty department was changed into the Department of Humanities and Arts.

Among the acclaimed professors of the department are honoured lecturers K. Hovsepyan, Yu. Safyan, H. Meghrikyan, S. Ghasabyan, N. Anastasov, S. Mkrtchyan, M. Levintsova, G. Ambardaryan as well as Sahakanush Grigoryan, Sylvia Gregoryan, Anahit Mirijanyan.

Today also such authoritative and popular lecturers like E. Hovhannisyan, A. Hovahannisyan, T. Melikyan, K. Sukiasyan and others work here. The Department has long-established relationship and efficient cooperation traditions with the following universities: YSU (Yerevan State University), V. Brusov Linguistic University, American University in Armenia, Slavic or Russian-Armenian University, French University in Armenia, Stepanakert State University, various international, educational and cultural foundations and organizations (DAAD, British Council, Pease Corps, IREX, ACCELS, Erasmus Mundus, etc.) also with the embassies of the USA, Great Britain, France, Russia, in the educational programmes of which the lecturers and students of the Department have a permanent and effective participation.

In recent years, about 45 students have studied at universities in the United States, Germany, France, Greece, Italy and Portugal. Many professors of the department have participated in a series of scientific conferences (St. Petersburg, Kazan, Montpellier, Washington, Monte Negro, Thessaloniki, Latvia, Bulgaria, etc.), about 15 lecturers, students have also participated in various international grant projects.
