“Famous, Yet Unknown Gurgen Mahari” literary matinee

 

On February 14, a literary matinee entitled “Famous, Yet Unknown Gurgen Mahari” was held in the reading-hall of Shirak State University library, commemorating the 120th anniversary of the acclaimed Armenian writer Gurgen Mahari. At the beginning of the matinee, Gayane Avetisyan, the Head of ShSU Library, told the audience about Gurgen Mahari’s life and literary activity.

Avetisyan emphasized that in Gurgen Mahari’s works, one can feel a constant presence of fervent lyricism, an authentic and immediate portrayal of emotions, encapsulating both the life joys and tragedy. She mentioned that the goal of the event was to show the students who love Mahari’s works the poetry and prose of the writer known for his distinctive and original style.

During the literary matinee, the students recited passages from Mahari’s novel “Blooming Barbed Wire” and other literary works, followed by watching the film portraying Mahari’s life and literary activity. The meeting was concluded by Gagik Khachikyan, Professor from the Chair of Armenian Language and Literature. He told the students about the novel “Burning Gardens” widely regarded as one of the greatest works in Eastern Armenian literature, but having a cruel fate, being publicly burned.
